Korean Pear 배
Korean Pear (Bae) (배) is a large and fragrant fruit native to China, Korea, and Japan. The pears are much larger and rounder than other varieties — closer in shape to an apple — and have a brown exterior. The sweet, translucent flesh is very juicy due to a high water content. Korean pears are much crispier and juicier than Western pears, which tend to have a buttery texture.
The pears make for a delicious snack and light dessert, of course, but they are also a great meat tenderizing agent. Their juice is frequently used in marinades for bulgogi and galbi.
Sourcing & Selecting
Korean pears are a good source of dietary fiber and are low in calories. They are also highly alkaline, have an 85% water content, and are a good source of Vitamins C and K.
