11 ozSliced Beef Sirloin 불고기용 등심 (can use other thinly sliced cuts)
⅓ cupSoy Sauce (regular) 왜간장
⅓ cupSugar 설탕
1 cup  Water 물
½ Onion (Medium) 양파
Green Onion 파
1 tspGarlic (minced) 다진 마늘
1 tspSesame Oil 참기름
pinch Black Pepper 후추
1 tspSesame Seeds 깨 (optional)
1 ozShiitake mushroom (dried) 표고버섯 (optional)
1 tbsCheongju, Korean Rice Wine 청주 (optional)

2 cups  Rice, white short grain 쌀
2 cups  Water 물
1 sheetSeaweed (Gim, Laver) 김 (thinly sliced carrot or any red colored food)
½ ozCrab Meat (Imitation) 맛살

1. Marinate bulgogi

Marinate beef. See here for detailed recipe for bulgogi. You can do this in advance and freeze it.

Marinate beef with

  • ⅓ cup soy sauce
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • a pinch black pepper
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp sesame seeds (optional)
  • onions, green onions

2. Make rice

3. Cook bulgogi

Remove the meat from the marinade (shake off the drippings) and cook in a frying pan on high heat for 5-10 min or until the meat is just cooked. OPTIONAL: Wash and slice 2-3 mushrooms of your choice. Add them when you start cooking the meat. Don’t add too many mushrooms because it will produce too much liquid.

4. Shape rice

Roughly shape into a heart shape. Then, cover with plastic to refine the shape.

5. Make smiley face

Cut seaweed into mini circles and thin strips and place on the rice to create a smiley face.

6. Make blush

Cut red part of the crabmeat into thin squares, and then cut corners to form heart shapes. Place them on the rice to create blush.

7. Cut cantaloupe

Cut cantaloupe into 1/2 inch thickness. Remove the peel.

Using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out the cantaloupe into heart shapes.

Make fruit skewers using various fruit.

10. Make lunch box

Place bulgogi and rice hearts in a lunch box. Use greens to separate the items and give some color. If the bento box is too deep, you can put a layer of rice at the bottom.

Place fruit skewers and chocolates into a second lunch box. You can use cupcake liners to divide up the box.
